Quiet Day

I just began this painting about 3 months ago. It still has a long way to go, but I thought I'd throw it up on the site anyway.

Judge Learned Hand - Jerry Talbot Owings

This is an absolutely brilliant example of my Fathers work. I look at this as the quintessential Jerry Owings illustration.
The incredible detail coupled with the perfectly captured emotion makes this drawing an example of an artist who has mastered his craft.
This and the following two drawings are my Dad's work and as humbling as it is, I wanted to put them on my site.
There is no comparision in terms of pure talent. Hands down my Father is the greatest artist I have ever met. I have learned a few things from him along the way, but have no doubts about the difference in skill when it comes to drawing, he is simply the best.

Pioneer Building - Framed

This frame border helps to bring out the colors of this painting, I like the darker outside edge. To see this painting in its unframed condition, scroll down on the site.
Comments on this frame choice are welcome.

Skip James - Framed

I chose this thick black frame with a recessed outline which lets the painting "jump" a little more than if it were in a standard frame. Scroll down on the site to see this painting in its unframed condition.

Pioneer Building in Saint Paul

Oil on Artist Board.
This painting took over 10 months to complete. Drying time was the biggest factor. Walnut oil was used as a medium in several glazes. This is the Pioneer Building in downtown Saint Paul.
This building is a fine example of early twentieth century American architecture and boasts intricate stone work and a wonderful "attendant operated" working elevator car inside. This was my attempt at an impressionist view. This painting was done entirely with a palette knife.

Terrace Court

Oil on Canvas. 24" x 36".
This painting is after the photograph by Alec Soth (with permission). I've included his wonderful photograph as a reference here. The photograph is so outstanding as to make it quite difficult to want to reproduce.

Instead of an exact copy or an artistic replica of the photograph, I wanted to paint the parts of this photo the spoke to me. I like the emptiness and mystery of the windows and excitement of the red doors. What wordly pleasures or pains lay just beyond them? The late evening sky giving way to the blackness.

This painting took approximately six months to complete. I took some artistic license with some of the features. I left out some of the background and the most obvious item was the red downspout/drain.
This painting in the collection of Christopher and Carol Drake.

Some trees

Oil Pastel on Board. An artist named Woodrow Olson gave me the idea to use oil pastels on small format canvas. He uses small paper and does incredible pastels.

Oil on canvas.
I added some highlights in Photoshop, which I then printed and used as a reference to finish the painting. I used a Wacom Tablet to draw the highlights.

Irvine Park, Saint Paul

Oil on board.
This is a painting of Irvine Park in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I've been going to this small city park for many years. It is surrounded by victorian houses and is an oasis among the city life. The park is quite pleasant and has a variety of flowers and trees, but its best feature is the wonderful fountain.

Landscape study

This is a landscape study. I painted this in oil on canvas. The mixing of colors was done on the palette and I used water-based oils so I was able to thin the paint with water, adding as much or as little paint as required.

The painting took about 5 hours to complete including sketches.

Ed Wynn - Jerry Talbot Owings

My Fathers version of Ed Wynn. Just another example of his outstanding work with light and shading. He absolutely captures the moment in every detail.

Old Man - Jerry Talbot Owings

I have a tremendous admiration for my Dad's ability to capture subtle detail.

This drawing illustrates his dedication to capturing every little detail.

If I try to see his art objectively I think as an artist he stays within his self and is exptremely disciplined. The detail in his work is impressive, I was lucky enough to have some of his talent for pencil and pen pass on to me.

His skillful use of shadow and light denotes a careful study of his subject matter which I often immitate, but have yet to master.

I think of my Dad as a true master with pencil and ink. He does not paint much, but if and when he takes it up I am sure whatever he creates will be impressive.
